723 Marsh Rd. #3 Menlo Park, CA 94025 December 15, 1989 Dear Friends and Family, It's been a stable year for me. I'm still living in the same place, working at the same job, going to the same church, and doing a lot of the same things with the same friends. One thing that was not so stable was the earth in the Bay Area on Oct 17. Yes, I did get shaken up in the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that hit that day. The quake was quite an adventure, but it didn't have much effect on me personally. I was without power for about nine hours, but suffered no damage to my apartment or office aside from a few things falling off the shelves. I was fortunate---the hardest hit areas are still rebuilding. The biggest news in my family comes from my sister's daughter Amy and her husband Jeff. Alexander David Horn, their first child, was born on August 2. (He's called Sasha by the family, the Russian nickname for Alexander.) So now my is sister a grandmother, my mom is a great-grandmother, and I am a granduncle, all for the first time. I made a quick weekend trip home in early October to meet the baby. He's very handsome, of course! I've traveled around the country a fair amount this year. I went to Boston in January, Colorado Springs in September, and Phoenix in December, all on business. I combined the Boston trip with a visit to my brother and his wife, and after the Phoenix trip I hiked the Grand Canyon with some friends from work. The weather at the Canyon was perfect---cool, sunny, and dry--- and we had a great time. We took it easy, walking to the bottom one day and back up the next. The Grand Canyon is a place you must see for yourself; descriptions and photographs can't do it justice. Other trips this year were to Tahoe at Thanksgiving and to Bible camp in the Sierra foothills in July. This year I was songleader, assistant activities director, and business manager at camp. Even with three hats on, my job was much less strenuous than being a counselor as I was last year. At Tahoe there was no snow (until we were about to leave!), so we paid a visit to a wedding chapel instead of going skiing. What, you say? Well, we certainly had the proprietor going, suggesting that as many as three couples in our party might be getting married. But of course we all "chickened out" and didn't come back. My final trip of the year will be to Milwaukee, from Dec 22 through Jan 1. I hope to see many of you then and get caught up on all the things that don't fit in a Christmas letter. I hope your news is all good! Love in Christ,
