707 Leahy St. #127C Redwood City, CA 94061 December 16, 1992 Dear Friends and Family, I feel very blessed as I enter this Christmas season. As always, Christmas reminds me of the birth of Christ our Savior and the supreme blessing he brought us all---making forgiveness of sins and a new status as beloved children of God freely available to all who believe. But this Christmas some wonderful physical blessings have come to me as well. As most of you know by now, I was diagnosed with cancer in July of this year, a lymphoma that started in the bone marrow space of my right thigh bone. I started chemotherapy in August. At that time my leg was badly swollen and I couldn't walk a step without crutches. As I write this, it has been two weeks since my final chemotherapy treatment. My last CAT scan and MRI were clear---though this does not guarantee the tumor is all gone, it is a very good sign. X-rays show my thigh bone is healing up nicely. What's more, I am now able to walk easily without crutches or cane, and I feel great! Each day brings a new little milestone. Whether it's walking without a cane, climbing stairs without using the handrail, seeing my hair start to grow back, or starting back to work full time, every big or small thing I'm able to do again is a joy. I still have a course of radiation treatments to go through in January, but those are much easier to handle than chemo---the side effects are few and relatively mild. The rest of my year's news seems anticlimactic, but here it is. In January I saw Paris for the first time, on a business trip that also included a stop in Edinburgh (where I'd been once before on vacation). Paris is cold and foggy in January, but it's still Paris. I had time to see only a few of the sights. My hotel was a short walk from the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Elysees, and the Arc de Triomphe, and I took a ferry down the Seine past Notre Dame and the Louvre, but didn't get to go inside. Next time. My mom came to visit twice during the year, the second time to take care of me as the doctors were confirming their diagnosis and starting treatment. Her presence was a great help and comfort. My niece Amy and her family came to visit later, as Jeff was attending a class in the Oakland area. It was great to see them and Sasha again, and to see Misha for the first time. This coming year I hope to get down to San Diego to visit my niece Beth, Tom, and their new little boy Nathan. For you non-Californians, San Diego is about 500 miles from where I live. Not exactly a quick day trip---but a lot closer than Wisconsin. Unfortunately for me, my other niece Leigh has moved to Virginia---a lot farther than Wisconsin (or even Massachusetts, where she used to live). I will be in Milwaukee from December 22 to January 2 this year. I hope to see many of you there. God's richest blessings to you in this Christmas season and throughout the coming year! With joy in Christ,
